Central Paramilitary Forces are now officially known as Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs)

This is linked to the last post.

Central forces were variably referred to as Central Paramilitary Forces (CPMFs), Central Police Organisations (CPOs) as well as Central Police Forces (CPFs).

The Home Ministry has however officially changed the nomenclature of BSF, ITBP, SSB, CISF and CRPF and these organisations shall now be called Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs). A letter to the effect has already been issued by the MHA.

The change does not affect other police organisations under the MHA.

This is a correct move. The police forces always liked to imitate the Army in outward appearance because of the popularity and respect enjoyed by the Army in the public eye and the lack of it as far as they were concerned. It was wrong to call armed police as para military. A para military force is an adjunct of the Army and works with them. An example is the Border Roads Organisation or Assam Rifles and even the NSG.

@ All

IMHO,this is a welcome move by MHA. Now, hopefully, these Central forces will realise that there was hardly anything 'military' about them in first place, be it trg, ethos, history, org or for that matter even rank structure!

With this change, the clamour (so prevalent amongst these forces) to equate themselves with Military in all respects will perhaps get diminished!!

Thanks to Hon'ble HM, Shri P Chidambaram.

Thanks to the Home Minister for putting these guys in their proper shoes. Or is it shadow boxing?
Now the military hierarchy vis a vis the CAPFs must be set right at the earliest and they must not clamour that they are better than the armed forces.

just curious.... What has been the rationale for such a change.

may be they want to appoint a General rank officer to lead the combined CAPFS

@anonymous Paramilitary had something to do with AF...IPS lobby prefered to be called Police,,,Their job to basicvally policing, hence the change....They may change their rank designation pattern in coming days. This will help them in a new identity...& ensure that people who join government jobs after SSB...remain different and Without DACP/NFFU....lol..

Any orders on rounding off / broadbanding of percentage of disability pension for pre 1-1-06 retirees based on the verdict of SC on 01-4-11 as published on this blog by Maj Navdeep ?

This will help the CAPFS to get quick promotions as they will no longer be compared with the Armed Forces. Smart move on their side.

i think it may be just a way of saying - we cant handle the maoist problem if it accelerates in the future. Get the military in.

@ Ravindra

this can not be a case, a General ranking officer can not head these organisations because
1) All of them are independent, made for specific purpose.
2) There can not be a parallal army.
These are renamed as police forces owing to greater similarities in work, ranks and organisation of these forces..

I am one of the paramilitary force (now police) person doing my duties at international Borders from last 10 years, I think There is no need to worry for change the name.People always likes that persons who are fight for their country not particularly a force with their name and history and uniform. So no worry for change the name from paramilitary to police fight for country live for country that is important.

Some of my brothers from army are either over obsessed with the term 'Military' or are facing 'personality disorder'. Don't forget the 'Sardar Post' incident which is the sole example of a CRPF Coy withholding the attack of a full Pak Inf Brigade. It's more about yourself and not the organisation.... When it comes to laying life for the motherland we we will be far ahead of you....

Thanks to P Chidambaram. This move will definitly frame a separate shining identity to the para military forces as they are under the shadow of military even their duty and the deeds is more contributing to the Indian security both as externelly and internally. Military forces always snatches the credits which resulted from the valour and sacrifices of the soldiers of paramilitary forces. In accordance with the great deeds military is shamelessly conducting campaign that they are protecting the nation always. The truth is that except in war and in some high altitude hard areas army has no role in the Indian security. Moreover the CPOs are executing highly riskfull actions like the border security and maoist operations with out any hesitation as the army fears to enter in theese areas. If u want to know about the role of CPMF go study what happened in parliament, battle at sardarpost, punjab rebellions etc.etc.....

surely friend, why doesnt any officer in the CAPF switch over to the army ?? I will tell u the answer. It is because it is a well known fact that the amount previleges and comfort the officers of the CAPF enjoy being hardly 3/4 in number in a battalion, it is not so in the Army where one finds more officers closely functioning with the troops. Needless to say 95% officers of the CAPF have been SSB rejects who have later on joined these so called erstwhile "Para Military" forces. One can imagine the state and quality of leadership in these forces.

@ anonymous, okay even if we believe that the data given by you happens to be authentic, these 95% so called "SSB rejects" come into the Central Armed Police Forces via a gruelling selection procedure & not simply picked up through trash my friend.. I wouldn't exaggerate, but I bet more than half of those "recommended candidates" for military wouldn't even clear the written examination of the CAPF.. If you've been to SSBs, whether recommended or not, u know it in your heart that its first stage of screening is, most of the times, unfair to even the best potential candidates.. & this is the very same junta who would go on to be recommended in their subsequent attempts.. Why? Do ppl tend to change so quickly, within matter of months? & as a matter of fact, a recommended candidate{who couldn't make it to the merit-list} gets rejected in his subsequent attempts.. Late Captain Vikram Batra, PVC (posthumous) was rejected 10 times ( +/- one) in the SSB.. What a joke! That's what they do it to their "one of the best" soldiers.. Poor guy would have felt like utterly useless after his 9 attempts.. SSB is one examination of all, that doesn't require preparation {some GTOs say it themselves}.. & there isn't a guarantee to even the recommended ones in their subsequent attempts.. No one is sure shot of their selection.. It is purely luck-based, that's why here in SSBs, you can even come across someone who's in his 12-13th attempt! Yeah that's right, they keep trying their luck & even get selected! Whereas in other competitive exams, by the time its your 3rd or 4th attempt, you get to know whether you have it in you to make it or not...
I always wondered what made military guys so arrogant, is it the training or their swanky lifestyles or something else.. But guess what, after seeing some of the talks here, I've figured out what made them the way they are... The SSBs! To be one hell of a fortuitous lad among a bunch of well-deserving young men, doesn't simply make one better.. Your actions make you better.. Army, as a whole does a great job, oh yeah, nothing against it. But aren't they supposed to do so? Cuz they're well credited & well-paid{remember MSP makes you better paid than even your IAS counterparts} for it too.. But scratch a little on the surface, if not all of them but most of their men's hearts are filled with arrogance, chauvinism, & intolerance towards their civilian brothers.. Thats a truth folks, harsh but true..
BTW my content shouldn't be viewed as anything against military, i love them too, like any citizen of this country.. It's just that they should also take some criticism in their stride like all of us do. Thank you....

I have served in CRPF and with my experience I can say that officers in CAPF are the most arrogant and insensitive individuals.Policies are worse and no accountability of officers. Officers command and perform sitting in offices without caring about the field troops.

"A paramilitary organisation is organized like an army and performs either civil or military functions in a country." Although this being definition of paramilitary force, IPS cadre never liked the idea because they are police officers and not paramilitary officers. In the same way army cadre officers never liked the idea of associating themselves with central police organisation like the
Assam Rifles ( with the pay and perks similar to other paramilitary organisations) which is dominated by them. Hence this mess.

You see , we are digressing from the issue but let me add my two cents on the army offrs vs CAPF offrs.
The reality is both are below par.
Reasons- Corruption, relatively no exposure to pleasures of life (before joining) so a tendancy to grab and hoard, fake machismo, Regiment cultural plank,
Now the question comes, why do they behave in this manner? Psychologically, it gives pleasure to damn everything you don't have and praise everything you have access to and others don’t have.
Our system of selection and rejection is such that it creates favoritism (Georgians, RIMCOLIANS, Armed forces son, Sainik school etc etc).
SSB as a method has already been rejected by many forces in the world.
The reality is that no system is perfect but what differentiates the good and the bad is the consistency, unbiased selection, realistic evaluation, course correction and acceptance of the context in which we operate.
